Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was warmly welcomed by thousands of supporters on Thursday night after storming angrily off the stage at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Supporters flooded the airport in Istanbul as Erdogan's plane landed, waving Turkish and PLO flags and reciting pro-Palestinian Authority slogans.
Erdogan left the Davos conference following an argument with President Shimon Peres over operation Cast Lead in Gaza. Peres told a critical Erdogan that Turkey would have responded similarly to rocket fire on Istanbul, a statement that got applause from the crowd. Erdogan was apparently irritated by the applause and by the fact that a moderator gave him only a short time to respond to Peres before cutting him off, saying there was no time for further debate.
