The Israeli animated film Waltz with Bashir, which won the Golden Globe award earlier this month, was officially nominated on Thursday for best foreign-language prize by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood. The film is vying with entries by directors from France, Germany, Austria and Japan when the Oscars are handed out on February 22nd.
The documentary traces director Ari Folman's journey to put together his memories from his time as an Israeli soldier during the Peace for the Galilee operation which sent Israeli troops to Lebanon in 1982. It was shown in Lebanon last Saturday, although it is officially banned there, according to Haaretz. Folman told the newspaper that the film has also been screened in Ramallah and may soon be shown in the Gulf states as well.
