In a news conference Saturday night, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that the Gaza operation would continue as long as necessary. "We want to restore quiet to the south. We intend to take care of our citizens as any other country would," he said, adding that it was likely that Hamas would increase its attacks on Israel in the coming days.

Olmert credited Israeli intelligence with the fact that nearly all the casualties in Gaza have been terrorists. "We worked very hard over the recent months to ensure that our intelligence would enable us to attack terrorists while keeping civilian casualties to a minimum," he said, adding that "Israel's war is with Hamas. We are not at war with the Palestinian people."
