Hamas announced on Sunday that it will nominate Speaker Abd al-Aziz Dweik of the Palestinian Authority's legislative council to replace Mahmoud Abbas as PA chairman. Dweik is currently being held by Israel for his contacts with Hamas leadership in Damascus.
Hamas says abu-Mazen's term ends in January. Abbas has expressed his intention of staying in office longer, but not for another term.
