The newly appointed chief rabbi of Holland said he will begin to search for Jews who were raised by Christians during the Holocaust and who may not be aware that they are Jewish. Rabbi Binyamin Jacobs, Holland's first chief rabbi since 1986, said he is shocked "to realize that people were born, raised and even passed away, without knowing that they were Jews."
Hundreds of Dutch families adopted Jewish children who survived the Holocaust or whose parents were murdered by Nazis. Many of the children were raised as Christians. "There are many archives and documents that may lead to the whereabouts of those children who are now quite elderly people," Rabbi Jacobs said.
