A new order being formulated by the Department of Defense will make it possible for Army Radio (Galei Tzahal) soldiers to work on the Sabbath. The order will circumvent the existing order that only allows soldiers' work on Sabbath in cases involving pikuach nefesh – i.e., the saving of lives.
In a response to a High Court motion filed by the Land of Israel Legal Forum, Attorney Avi Licht from the State Attorney's Office said that Army Radio's "special brand of broadcasting" requires that a new order be written up.
Licht added that Army Radio's activity of Sabbaths and high holidays (besides Yom Kippur) is necessary to meet the needs of soldiers who do not go home on Sabbaths and in order for the station "to maintain public relevance on weekends and holidays."
