At least six Israelis, and two Israelis with dual U.S. citizenship, have so far been identified among the nearly 200 so far announced as having been killed in the attacks in Mumbai, Israel's ambassador to India, Mark Sofer, said Saturday. Among the dead so far identified are Yocheved Orpaz, 60, from Bat Yam. Two other non-Israeli Jews are also among the dead. They were later identified as Leibish Teitlebaum, an American from Brooklyn, and Ben-Zion Croman, an Israeli with dual U.S. citizenship – both of whom were kashrus supevisors working in the Far East. Sofer told Israel Radio that nine Jews – including a seventh Israeli – were killed in the attacks.Sofer said Saturday night that he was working to bring the bodies of the dead back from India, but that it could be a lengthy process, as Mumbai slowly returns to normal.
Among the murdered are the Chabad shaliach to India, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, and his wife Rivka. Shortly after their deaths were announced, a press conference was held in Crown Heights by Rabbi Yehuda Krinsky of "Hamercaz L'inyanei Chinuch." Rabbi Krinsky expressed sorrow over the murder of the Holtzbergs in Chabad's name. "We send our condolences to the family and friends of the young couple, and to all those who were killed in the Mumbai terror attacks," he said.
