Hundreds of residents of Ashkelon demanded on Thursday that the government respond to rocket launchings by terrorists in Hamas-controlled Gaza and provide security for those living in Israel's southern Mediterranean coastal area. The demonstration followed several days of rocket attacks on the area.
The group blocked a highway at the city's entrance for several minutes under police supervision. The committees have organized protests for Friday and next week as well. In addition, some committee members are pushing to keep children home from local schools in protest of the government's failure to fortify school buildings.
A small group of leftist extremists held a counterdemonstration to protest Israel's closing of crossings into Gaza as a response to the missile fire.
