A pro-Jewish group called My House, which promotes Carmiel as a Jewish city, won three of 17 seats on the local council in this week's elections. The opposing "Carmiel is for All of Us" group, which ran with a joint Jewish-Arab list, barely attracted any support.
One of the slogans used by the five-month old My House party was "my house is not for sale," referring to a desire to keep the city totally Jewish. Carmiel was created with a mandate to be a Jewish city in the Galilee, which is dominated by Arab and Druze villages.
