Palestinian sources in Kalkilye claimed Sunday night that a large number of Israeli troops were operating in the town, about an hour northeast of Tel Aviv, at the narrowest point of Israel (12 miles from the Mediterranean Sea) before the Six Day War in 1967.
Exchanges of gunfire have been reported at the scene. The Israel Defense Forces' Spokesperson's Office says forces sent to investigate a warning along the security-separation barrier in the Kalkilye area were fired upon and returned fire. No injuries were reported although a military vehicle was damaged. Troops are searching the area.
