The government has approved the appointment of former Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau to chair the Yad VaShem Holocaust Memorial Council.
Rabbi Lau was born in Poland and most of his relatives were destroyed in the Treblinka concentration camp. He, himself, was freed from Buchenwald by United States soldiers when he was 8-years-old.
Rabbi Meir will take the place of the late Yosef Tommy Lapid.
