Jews living Israel started asking for rain Tuesday night in the thrice-daily silent devotion, by adding the phrase, "and give dew and precipitation in a blessed way."
In Israel the prayer is added on the eve of the fourth day of the Jewish month Cheshvan, outside of the Land Jews do not add it to their prayers until the start of December.
Jews added a different phrase to the silent standing prayer weeks ago, "Who makes the wind blow and brings down the rain," but the phrase only mentions rain, without actually asking for it.
