Tsipi Livni will ask President Shimon Peres on Sunday for a two week extension to the deadline for presentation of a new government, sources in Kadima said Saturday night. According to Israel's election law, Livni can ask for the extension if she feels there is a reasonable chance she can form a government. After the approval by Labor and Kadima of a coalition agreement last week, Peres is expected to grant Livni her request.
Livni has been meeting with the heads of a number of parties, including Meretz and Shas, in the hope that they will agree to join her government. If Livni fails to form a government by the end of the two week deadline, new elections will be called within 90 days.
