Remaining Captive Israelis on Caribbean island Freed
The Ashtrom construction company said Saturday that four remaining employees who were being held by Chinese workers demanding back pay on the Caribbean island of Turks and Caicos have been set free. Ashtrom on Friday had agreed to pay the back wages to the Chinese construction workers building a hotel for the company, after the workers seized 15 of Ashtrom's Israeli employees on the island. The other Ashtrom employees were released Thursday and Friday.
The company is paying the workers not only their back wages, but the full amount of a fee they paid in order to get the job – as much as $15,000, one of the project managers was quoted in several news reports as saying. Ashtrom stopped paying the workers earlier this month when work was halted due to the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, which had been funding the project.
