Pope Benedict XVI on Thursday expressed a prayer on Thursday that the process to make a saint out of controversial Holocaust-era pope Pius XII should "proceed happily." Pope Benedict's claim that Pius worked "secretly and silently" did not address a veiled reference to the wartime pope made recently by Haifa Chief Rabbi She'ar-Yashuv Cohen in remarks against canonization.
Rabbi Cohen told the Synod of Bishops, "We cannot forget the sad and painful fact of how many, including great religious leaders, didn't raise a voice in the effort to save our brethren, but chose to keep silent and help secretly."
