The Israel Police agree that a probe is necessary in the Yom Kippur violence between Jews and Arabs in Akko following calls by Jewish and Aram Members of Knesset for an investigation of the police response. The police force - staffed by Arabs on the Jewish holiday - has been charged with being slow to respond.

Police Chief Insp.-Gen. David Cohen says that security forces were caught by surprise by the outbreak of hostilities, explaining that they had no information indicating that such an incident was about to occur.
