Pinchas Avivi, the Foreign Ministry's Deputy Director General for Eurasia, held a press conference on Monday night in which he denied rumors that Israel had supplied weapons to Georgia during its recent war with Russia. The rumors were published in several Russian newspapers this week as acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visits the country.
According to Avivi, Israel and Russia have tacitly agreed that Israel will not sell weapons to Russia's enemies, and Russia will not supply weapons to Iran and Syria. Olmert is hoping to get the Russian government to promise to stop weapons sales to Iran and Syria during his current visit.
