An estimated 100 people took part in Thursday's demonstration on behalf of Jewish nationalist prisoners, according to the Honenu legal-rights organization. A focus of the rally was Ofer Gamliel, who has been on a hunger strike for 18 days in attempt to get furloughs for Jewish prisoners, among the rights already afforded Arab prisoners. It has been learned that a court has accepted Gamliel's appeal of his transfer to a prison in Beer Sheva in the wake of the strike as unnecessary.
The rally was held at a protest tent erected near the Mercaz HaRav yeshiva in Jerusalem, where a terrorist killed eight students and wounded scores of others a few months ago. Representatives of victims families called for release of the Jewish prisoners.
Also speaking were Rabbi Dov Lior, chairman of the Rabbinical Council of Judea and Samaria, Rabbi Yaakov Medan of the Har Etzion yeshiva and Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich, a prisoner of Zion in the former Soviet Union
