The head of the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, Kadima MK Menahem Ben-Sasson, said Monday that he will bring a motion in the Knesset to automatically charge the head of the largest Knesset faction with forming a government in the event of a prime minister stepping down.
According to the current law, when a prime minister resigns, the President determines who will form the new government, based on meetings with Knesset factions.
Following the Sunday resignation of Kadima party member Ehud Olmert from the prime ministership, his replacement as leader of the Kadima party, recently-elected Tzipi Livni, is likely to be given the task of trying to form a coalition.
