President Shimon Peres called for "continuity of governance" in his short speech after receiving Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's resignation Sunday.

"The state of Israel is facing complex diplomatic, security, economic and social challenges that require continuity of governance," Peres said. "Israel is a strong country with a solid democracy, and even a change of prime ministers does not affect its strength, its determination to protect its citizens and its adherence to peace."

The question facing the country's politicians after Olmert's resignation is whether Kadima will continue to rule under Tzipi Livni or whether new elections will be called.
