The Pomegranate crop in Israel is expected to reach a record high of 20,000 tons this season, 25 percent higher than last year's yield. Nearly 25 percent of the fruit will be exported.
Pomegranates are becoming more popular because of the growing awareness of their being healthy. The crop is good for farmers because the fruit requires less water than most other crops. The fruit is in high demand before Rosh HaShanah because of a tradition to recite a blessing over the fruit's plentiful seeds, a sign that the Almighty will increase the merits of Jews.
