A senior British police officer was taken to task by his superiors after he masqueraded as international Al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden at a carnival just days before the seventh anniversary of the terror group's "9/11" attack on the United States. Last Saturday, Chief Superintendent Colin Terry wore the costume at a parade and carnival in the Cornwall village of Grampound, a move the Independent Police Complaints Commission later termed "clearly inappropriate."
The officer, who said he had not meant to offend anyone, told The Guardian newspaper that he was "quite horrified that someone would see this negatively. This is a local event that has been running for many, many years, raising money for charity." Terry was involved in training police officers in Afghanistan as part of a European Union project, but "will not be returning to the E.U. mission," said a Foreign Office spokesman.
Al Qaeda terrorists murdered almost 3,000 Americans and foreign nationals after hijacking four airliners, two of which they flew into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, bringing the structures crashing to the ground and destroying several other buildings around the plaza in the process. A third plane was flown into the Pentagon building in Washington, DC, but the fourth attack, intended for the White House, failed when determined passengers gave up their lives to overcome their captors and brought the plane crashing to the ground in a Pennsylvania field instead.
