Govt. Approves Proposal To Limit Supreme Court Power

The government on Sunday approved Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann's controversial proposal to amend the Basic Law on the Judiciary in order to limit the Supreme Court's power. The amendment is intended to limit the High Court's power of judicial review over laws passed by the Knesset.

The proposal, which was approved by a 13 to 11 vote, would give the Knesset the right to re-legislate a law found unconstitutional by the court, if the decision to re-legislate is passed by a majority of 61 MKs, with a difference of at least five votes between supporters and opponents.
