Ukrainian customs officials destroyed 173 Jewish prayer books and Bibles that had been sent from Russia for use by the Jewish community because a Russian courier did not have enough money to pay customs fees, according to a Ukrainian newspaper. The report set off fierce reactions in the Ukrainian Jewish community, which has suffered from growing anti-Semitism.
Rabbi Yechiel Levitansky, the rabbi of the Sumy Jewish community, complained that worshippers lack enough prayer books and waited a long time for the shipment.
