(IsraelNN.com) A memorial plaque has been placed on a Kanczuga, Poland building that served as a synagogue before World War II. The decision to place the plaque on the building was made after Shavei Israeli chairman Michael Freund asked Kanczuga Mayor Jack Solek to erect the memorial following a ceremony last May marking the restoration of Siedlezcka's old Jewish cemetery, which Freund financed. The cemetery served several Jewish communities, including Kanczuga.

"I am very pleased and deeply moved that the mayor responded to my request and had the city put up a sign on the front of the synagogue to remind everyone that Jews once prayed there, including my family. This is an important step towards ensuring that what happened to the Jews of Kanczuga during the Holocaust will not be forgotten," Freund said.

In 1942, the Nazis rounded up Kanzcuga's 1,000 Jews and marched them to the cemetery, where they murdered them and buried them in a mass grave.
