Kfar Tapuach's Canine Defense Unit, a unique group of “volunteer” dogs that have been trained to rescue victims of terror attacks, accidents, and fires, as well as track terrorists and defend Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, is celebrating its seventh anniversary. The Canine Defense Unit, working with security forces, has helped prevent at least four terror attacks, and hundreds of dogs trained by the unit have been deployed in communities around the country. The program has been so successful that fire departments in Israel have begun to follow the unit's example, training dogs in SAR (search and rescue) missions to find victims of fires, earthquakes, and other calamities.
The Tapuach unit has embarked on a number of important and interesting projects recently. Tel Aviv firefighters will be working with unit dogs and personnel to train its own “staff” of SAR dogs. In addition, the group is establishing a unique program, in which 15 yeshiva students will combine Torah learning with training on how to work with SAR dogs.
Unfortunately, Canine Defense Unit officials say, money to purchase, train, feed and house the dogs is short – and they are appealing for help from the public. Anyone who can help sponsor this vital life-saving project is urged to send a generous contribution to Dogs For Israel, PO Box 6592, Jerusalem, Israel or to donate online http://www.defendisrael.net/donate.shtml. Emails of inquiry can be sent to JewishLegion@aol.com In addition, anyone interested in joining future courses is invited to contact the organization as well.
