Democratic Presidential hopeful Barack Obama has chosen Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware as his running mate. Biden is the head of the generally pro-Israel Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and was chosen by Obama to strengthen the Democratic candidate's stance on foreign affairs, where many critics say he is inexperienced.
In a 2007 interview with the American Jewish affairs program Shalom TV, Biden said that Israel was "the single greatest strength America has in the Middle East." Biden said "I am a Zionist. You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist.” Asked about Jonathan Pollard, Biden said that he should be given “leniency.”
