Jerusalem Commission Releases City's New Building Plan

The Jerusalem Regional Planning and Building Commission has released a new building plan for the city and its outlying areas.  The commission will support new housing projects, especially for young couples, with an emphasis on quality of life and developed public spaces.  Among the new neighborhoods will be high-density and low-density neighborhoods, with some neighborhoods featuring low-level buildings, and some containing unrestricted high-rises.

The Regional Planning Commission banned all construction in Jerusalem's valleys, and limited buildings to 3-4 floors in the Old City basin, depending on the proximity of the buildings to the Old City walls.

The Society for the Protection of Nature has urged the commission to restrict high-rises to 18 floors, and to exclude Gilo, French Hill, and Ramot from consideration for the building of high rises, saying the areas are close to the Old City and to the historic city center.
