Lebanese President Gen. Michel Sleiman met Syrian President Bashar Assad Wednesday, in a historic visit that will be followed by the establishment of diplomatic relations, according to the Al Jazeera Arab network.

The two-day visit is the first by a Lebanese head of state since Syrian troops withdrew from Lebanon in 2005.

Sleiman and Assad, whose states have not had official diplomatic relations since their independence more than 60 years ago, finally agreed to establish ties last month in Paris.
