Kremlin Rejects Georgian Ceasefire, Continues Bombing

Swarms of Russian jets launched new bombing raids on Georgian territory Monday and Georgia faced the threat of a second front of fighting as Russia demanded that Georgia disarm troops near the breakaway province of Abkhazia. Russia rejected the latest ceasefire offer proposed by Georgia, saying it would not even consider a ceasefire at present.

Though the Kremlin said it has no plans to venture deeper into Georgian territory, a possible two-front battlefield would be a major escalation in the Russo-Georgian conflict that exploded Friday after American and Israeli-trained Georgia attempted to regain control of South Ossetia.

Russian jets hit communications facilities on the outskirts of the Georgian capital and also targeted the Black Sea port of Poti.  Georgia's Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili says Russian tanks have been thwarted near the town of Gori, a town of 50,000 people.
