David Tenenbaum: Jewish, Yes. Spy, No.

The name of US Army engineer David Tenenbaum of Southfield, Michigan has been cleared, as far as the Pentagon is concerned, but the Orthodox Jewish American is not satisfied and said in a report published in the Detroit Free Press that his family was "literally terrorized" by the investigation against him.

Tenenbaum filed a lawsuit against the US government in 2000, suing for more than $20 million in damages after suffering through years of a federal investigation that tried to prove he was an Israeli spy. He would also like an apology from the Army. "It was well known that Mr. Tenenbaum was Jewish, lived his religious beliefs and by his actions appeared to have a close affinity for Israel," said the Pentagon report that was released three weeks ago. "We believe that Mr. Tenenbaum was subjected to unusual and unwelcome scrutiny because of his faith and ethnic background, a practice that would undoubtedly fit a definition of discrimination."

Tenenbaum was placed on paid leave in 1997 while he was being investigated by the FBI but has since returned to his job as an engineer with the US Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM) in Warren, Michigan.
