(IsraelNN.com) General Mohammed Suleiman, the senior aide and advisor to Syrian President Bashar Assad, was assassinated on Friday, according to Arab news sources. Suleiman also was Syria's liaison officer to the Hizbullah terrorist party in Lebanon. A sniper shot and killed Suleiman in the Syrian port city of Tartous, but Syria authorities unsuccessfully tried to prevent publication of the killing.

Last February, Imad Mughniyeh, the military commander of Hizbullah, was assassinated in Damascus. Syria accused Israel of being behind the killing, but Jerusalem denied any involvement.
