An IDF soldier charged with shooting at a Palestinian Authority Arab being held for participating in a violent demonstration against the Judea-Samaria security barrier near Nili'in two weeks ago was released from Military Police custody Tuesday morning, according to the IDF. The incident was filmed, allegedly by a 14-year-old PA Arab girl from her home in the village.
The soldier said that he was ordered to fire at the prisoner by his commanding officer, a lieutenant-colonel, who denied the allegation. Voice of Israel government radio reported Tuesday morning that the soldier's fellow troops sent a letter to Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi supporting his claim and saying that the commander, Lt.-Col. Omri, had displayed irresponsible behavior in the past as well.
The investigation continues.
