A report in the UK’s Guardian newspaper indicates that the U.S. may return its diplomatic presence to the Islamic Republic of Iran after almost 30 years. Stationing of minor diplomats, according to the report, may lead to the renewed opening of a full U.S. embassy in the country.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed in 1979 during the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and the ensuing hostage crisis.
