Obama Admits He Erred in Call for Undivided Jerusalem

Democratic presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama has admitted he made a mistake in his declaration earlier this year to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) that Jerusalem should be the undivided capital of Israel. Following fierce Arab opposition to his remark, he immediately clarified his stand and said that the status of the capital is up to Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA).

In a CNN interview Sunday afternoon, Sen. Obama explained, "The truth is that this was an example where we had some poor phrasing in the speech. And we immediately tried to correct the interpretation that was given."

He said his point was that he does not want to see barbed wire dividing the city, as it did between 1948 and 1967, when eastern Jerusalem was restored to Israel in the Six-Day War. However, he did not directly answer a question if he supported a divided capital.
