Egyptian police fired on Bedouin smuggler Ahmed Salim Oweid yesterday, killing him. The Bedouin infiltrator was smuggling illegal African migrants across the border with Egypt into Israel when police called upon him to stop; when he did not, he was shot twice and killed. The 30 migrants who corssed the border with him are currently being rounded up by Egyptian police.
Border violence has increased in recent months as Egypt cracks down on migrants; more than 15 migrants have been killed by various Egyptian security forces this year. Amnesty International says thousands of migrants try to cross into Israel from Egypt each year, fleeing conflict and chaos in Africa.
