The Secondary School Teachers' Union and the National Parents' Union petitioned the High Court Wednesday not to allow schools to reopen after the summer vacation unless they are made earthquake-proof. The teachers demand that the Ministry of Education and the Center for Local Government carry out safety checks to ensure that the schools can withstand earthquakes.
The petitioners claim that 1,500 of Israel's schools were built over 35 years ago and some are built according to outdated specifications.
