The Interior Committee of the Knesset deliberated Monday on the actions of the police surrounding last Wednesday’s terror attack in Jerusalem. The Knesset members scrutinized the actions of the first policeman who entered the cab of the tractor, found the terrorist bleeding profusely, but did not shoot to ensure that he was dead. As a result, the terrorist proceeded to kill another woman.
The question that arose is whether the Israeli police are fearful of being subjected to investigative committees and are thus hindered from taking quick and appropriate action under pressure. The families of the victims said that the police officer's hesitation stemmed from concern to stand trial for every bullet shot.
Miki Levy, a former police commander of the Jerusalem region, said that policemen are not trained to confirm the death. He said that it is not ethical or legal. Police are only trained to neutralize violence.
