A 75 year-old man who was arrested in Nazeret Illit for a debt of NIS 4,200 ($1285) was released from jail after local police chipped in to pay his bail.
The elderly man, who has no relatives and lives on NIS 800 a month, could not afford the NIS 200 bail set by the Nazeret District Court. When police in the jail heard that he would have to remain in jail because he could not pay the fee, they opened a collection toward his release, and raised the necessary sum to send the aged detainee back home.
