Only 38 percent of Israelis believe the police are successfully handling their duties, according to a Public Security Ministry poll released Friday. Only twenty-two percent of those polled said they believed the police force had improved over the past two years.
A majority of 81 percent said they appreciated the police force’s ability to fight terrorism. However, most respondents did not see fighting terrorism as the police’s primary goal. Twenty-eight percent said police should focus more energy on fighting traffic accidents, while 21 percent said the primary goal should be fighting crime. Only 35 percent said they appreciated the police force’s abilities to fight traffic violations and crime.
Seventy percent said they believe the number of officers currently stationed in public areas is insufficient. However, over 70 percent said they feel very secure in the area in which they live, with hareidi-religious and religious respondents being the most likely to report feeling secure.
