In response to increasingly aggressive terror attacks on Jewish civilians and agricultural workers in Western Negev farming towns in the vicinity of terror-infested Gaza, the Defense and Agriculture Ministries have decided to protect citizens through the fortification of some 20 tractors. Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai (Labor) finalized the decision, at an estimated cost of NIS 3 million, or $45,500 per tractor. The cost will be split between the Agriculture and Defense ministries.
Because of ongoing brazen Arab sniper and rocket attacks and Israel's lack of military response, farmers in local areas have been forced to significantly reduce their agricultural activities. After consultations between local farmers and government officials, it was decided the State would fortify tractors operating up to 1,000 yards from the Gaza border.
According to Vilnai, “this is another major step towards helping the Gaza-vicinity communities. The defense establishment will continue to work towards ensuring that every farmer can work his land to the last inch.”
