Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and United States President George Bush will discuss the latest developments in mediated negotiations between Israel and Syria when the two meet next week in the US, sources said Sunday morning. Israeli, Syrian, and Turkish officials announced the existence of the negotiations last week.
While Israeli politicians who support the talks have touted them as a way to break Syria from Iran and stop its support for terrorism in Lebanon and Israel, Syria recently rejected Israel’s demand that it end its ties with Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah. An editorial printed Saturday in the state newspaper Tishrin said Syria “does not bargain over its relations with other countries and people.”
