The United Nations Security Council expressed strong support on Thursday for a deal ending recent violent clashes in Lebanon. The deal was widely seen as strengthening Hizbullah, which won the veto power in Lebanon’s parliament that pro-Syrian factions have been demanding for several months.
The council called to implement the deal “and all relevant Security Council resolutions” immediately. The mention of the council’s resolutions was seen as a reference to a 2004 resolution that calls for Hizbullah to give up its weapons. Hizbullah leaders refused to discuss the group’s weapons during recent negotiations with the Lebanese government.
