Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas in Gaza, said Thursday night that Hamas would not agree to a temporary ceasefire with Israel unless Israel were to open all Gaza crossings. Gaza crossings are currently open to the passage of electricity, gas, humanitarian supplies, and sick civilians, but are closed to all other traffic.
Haniyeh said Hamas would withdraw its request for a ceasefire if the group continued to be “humiliated” by Israel. Hamas recently offered a temporary ceasefire deal that would include an end to rocket and mortar shell attacks from Gaza in exchange for an end to Israeli counterterrorism operations in the area. Hamas and other terrorist groups would continue to import weapons and train terrorists during the ceasefire, and would reserve the right to attack Israel for any perceived transgression of the ceasefire terms.
