Israel Asks France To Clarify Policy on Hamas

The Foreign Ministry has asked senior French officials to explain its position on contacts with Hamas following a statement that the government has "contacts" but not "relations" with the terrorist party. However, Israel's question to France came the same day that Vice Prime Minister Chaim Ramon (Kadima) stated that the Israeli government has been talking with Hamas.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Aryeh Merkel said that the French government has assured Israel that there is no change in the position of France vis-à-vis Hamas." In Washington, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters questioning him about France's contacts, "We don’t believe it is helpful to the process of bringing peace to the region."
