Close to a thousand Chabad-Lubavitcher Chassidim marched through the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn late Friday afternoon to protest the vicious beating and robbery of a young yeshiva student the night before.
The demonstration, which began at 4:30 p.m. at the site of the assault on Albany and Empire Boulevard, passed the police precinct and ended at Eastern Parkway next to the world headquarters of the Lubavitch movement. Police mobilized quickly to cover the event, which, with one or two minor exceptions, passed peacefully.
The 16-year-old student was found unconscious on the street, badly beaten and stripped of his wallet and other belongings, the latest in a series of increasingly vicious anti-Semitic incidents in the racially and ethnically mixed neighborhood.
