Egypt has halted all exports of fava (ful) beans and lentils, because of a recent shipment of beans to Israel, the Muslim Brotherhood said. The radical Islamist movement that is the parent group of Hamas, claimed that it engineered the export halt because of the shipment to Israel. The shipment, from Alexandria to Haifa, took place at the end of 2007. Brotherhood spokesmen accused the seller of giving Israel a discount price, far below the true market value of the beans.
Islamist members of the Egyptian Parliament have increased their demands to cut off relations with Israel over the past several months. The Islamists want an immediate halt of Egyptian natural gas sales to Israel, a recall of the country's ambassador to Israel, and cutting off all commercial and diplomatic ties with Israel.
