Hebrew U. Scientists Organize IED Conference

(IsraelNN.com) Hebrew University scientists Professor Ronnie Kosloff and Professor Joseph Almog are organizing the first international symposium on improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The conference will take place next week from Sunday to Thursday in the city of Rosh HaNikra, near the Lebanese border. Over 100 experts from 12 countries have been invited to the event.

Among those invited are top security professionals from the United States and Britain. The experts will discuss the use of IEDs throughout the world, particularly in Israel, Iraq and Afghanistan.

IEDs present a challenge to defense officials due to their high sensitivity, the ease with which terrorists can obtain ingredients and assemble the bombs, and the difficulty in detecting the compounds used in making them. The conference will focus on the latest information gathered by counterterrorism experts and scientists, including new methods of detecting and dismantling IEDs, the properties of the latest IEDs, and ways to prevent their use.
