13.5 Years for Killing Fetus in ‘Honor’ Shooting

(IsraelNN.com) Taib Abu Kishak of Lod was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison on Tuesday for killing an unborn baby in an “honor” shooting. Kishak shot his cousin’s 24-year-old wife, who was in her ninth month of pregnancy, because his family was unhappy over her relationship with his cousin.

Kishak shot his cousin’s wife from short range as she stood to greet him in an attack judges called “premeditated” and “cruel.” The young woman suffered serious wounds and was left with lifelong scars, and is no longer able to conceive. Kishak was also convicted of bursting into the victim’s sister’s house, where the victim was recovering from her wounds, and threatening both women.

As part of the sentence, Kishak will be required to pay his victim NIS 150,000. Justice Yehudi Shevach, who sat on the panel that sentenced Kishak, called to give him the maximum penalty for his crime—20 years in prison and a fine of NIS 228,000—but her opinion was overruled.
