Dichter Opposes Egyptian Mediation on Gaza Ceasefire

Public Security Minister Avi Dichter expressed his opposition during the weekly Sunday morning Cabinet meeting to Egypt's proposal for a tadhiyeh ("calm") in Judea and Samaria between Israel and Palestinian Authority terrorists. Dichter pointed out that Egyptian mediators have been unable to secure a dependable ceasefire in Gaza, a source of continued terror against Israel.

Egyptian intelligence chief General Omar Suleiman is expected to arrive in Israel on Monday to receive an answer from the government on whether it agrees to halt counterterrorism activities in Gaza, Judea and Samaria and open the Gaza crossings in exchange for a halt to rocket attacks on Jewish communities in the western Negev.
